The “Ugly Truth”.
A Love-Hate Story.

Tribute to Rembrandt ‘s “Artist in Studio”
30″ x 40″
Acrylic & Oil on canvas

A big part of the artistic process is observation. Artists love to observe and play with the intensity of reality’s unnoticed details.

Rembrandt was criticized for painting so realistically, some said he favored ugliness over beauty. Sometimes, art is just the ugly truth, isn’t it. Could this be the reason behind the notorious love-hate relationship between Artists and Power? Everyone loves art, but not everyone wants their perception of reality to be threatened by observations that challenge it.

Whereas Diego Velasquez ‘s work was a filtered version of reality, beautifying the King’s image, Rembrandt’s realistic depiction of reality also forced a certain amount of… self-reflection.
