A Foot in Two Worlds.

Adélaïde Labille-Guiard “Self Portrait with Two Pupils”
30″ x 24″
Acrylic on canvas

Concepts such as “the starving Artist” or “Artists selling their soul to the devil” are hardly fresh. But clichés aside, making ends meet while taking the time to develop skills has always been a challenge for Artists. Many well-known Artists have worked for wealthy families and/or corporations in order to sustain themselves while sometimes secretly holding views that were opposite that of their employers. It was the case for Adélaïde Labille-Guiard, who held French-Republican views while working as a portraitist for the royal family in the late 1700’s… until the revolution.
