Surpassing our Species’ Benchmarks.

If we saw a robot dancing ballet, it wouldn’t be the dance that amazes us, but rather the human effort that went into programming a dancing robot. Using forms that mimic those of a fellow human and programming them to move in a way that challenges real-world physics is indeed quite a feat! It’s hard enough to move our own body without fail.

Seeing machines produce or reproduce the best of our species’ accomplishments from the real-world is neat. But there is always a certain “Meh, it’s machine-made” sentiment at the back of our minds, no matter how good the result may be. From arts to elite sports, human beings do appreciate and value the endeavour that goes into surpassing our own species’ benchmarks. 

So when we feel awe from the exploits of robotics, it is really the humans behind them we admire. Because despite our need for faster and cheaper products, we innately know and appreciate what it takes to produce a masterpiece.
